Ship Loyal Judith

On November 25, 1740, the ship "Loyal Judith" arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam with settlers from Germany. Germany had suffered terribly from long years of war. For many of her people the situation had become unendurable. Others were persecuted for religious reasons. The Germans tried life in several of the colonies, and therefore they moved around quite a bit. Pennsylvania even today is famous for her "Pennsylvania Dutch," who are really not Dutch at all, but descendants of the Germans who came over in the eighteenth century.

Although a great number of people came to the new colonies in the seventeenth century, still more came in the eighteenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century there were probably in all the English colonies about 1,500,000 people, of whom 200,000 were slaves. After 1750, the immigration from Europe was small, with a few thousand slaves brought in from Africa each year.

Four fifths of the American Colonists lived within reach of navigable waters flowing into the Atlantic. Everywhere farming in some form was the occupation of the great mass of the people.

Philadelphia with about 20,000 people, Boston, New York, Charleston, and Newport were the five largest towns.

By far the largest part of the people were English. In 1790 when the first US census was taken, 80 per cent of the population were of English Descent. Yet in many of the colonies other nationalities also were represented. One important group were the Germans.

One of the men listed on board was a Peter Croll, age 27. Some believe that this could be Peter Grauel, however his age does not match his birth date of March 5, 1692. He would have been 47 instead of 27, or could there have been a mistake on the age as well as the name?
