In 1751 the ship Duke of Bedford with Captain Richard Jeffreys sailed from Rotterdam by way of Portsmouth and arrived in Philadelphia, 14 Sep 1751. On board were 9 Roman Catholics and 120 Calvinists. Among the passenger is listed a Peter Grauel. This may be the Peter Grauel of Langenselbold, Hessen, Germany and not the Peter Croll mentioned on the Ship Loyal Judith. Peter Croll is listed at age 26 which would mean he was born in 1714 and not in 1692.
Another Peter Crauel died in Cumberland Co., PA in 1762. He had adult children just as Peter in NC had. They appear to be about the same age. So it is possible the man in Cumberland Co. Could have come on the Loyal Judith and Peter Grauel came on the Duke of Bedford.
Peter Grauel
Peter Croll, on the Loyal Judith may have been Peter Grauel, later spelled Crowell. Most of the spelling were from the sound of the names, as English was new to the Germans.
If Peter Grauel on the Duke of Bedford was also our Peter, he could have made a second trip, returning in 1751.
The Crowells of Peter Crowell of 1763 Mecklenburg Co., NC are related to the Grauels of Langenselbold, Hessen, Germany, verified by Y-DNA tests.
Peter Grauel was christened March 5, 1692 in Langeselbold, Hessen Germany. This large town is just east of Frankfort. His parents were Conrad Grauel and Magdelene Helene Dietrick. Peter married Catharine sometime before 1740.
Peter and Catharine had four children, the first of which most likely was on the Loyal Judith, traveling as a family of three.
Simon Crowell was born between 1727-1732 in Germany and died in March 1838 in Union Co., NC.
Wilhelm\William Crowell was born about 1740 in PA, and died in 1822 in Bedford Co. TN, about age 82.
Deitrich Crowell was born about 1742 and died after 1768 in Mecklenburg Co., NC.
George Crowell was born on 7 July, 1747 in PA., died on 23 October, 1837 in Stanly Co., NC, at age 90 and was guried in Talbert Graveyard, Badin-New London Rd., Stanly Co., NC.
