Family Of Eight

As I sat on the porch and try
in the fading light to read a book
a movement in the corner of my eye
afraid to move for a better look

I froze for ten minutes just waiting
to see what would appear
first the mother cautiously watching
for movement then another deer

so still with the book I had started
they starred back then something fast
across the yard a fawn darted
with the parents calmly eating grass

light was fading as three new
yearlings appeared ready to play
two more fawns ran into view
with mother making sure they didn't stray

now they were all in view not more
than twenty feet into the yard
as they played a game and tore
running back and forth so hard

sitting still for almost an hour
my leg was starting to cramp
almost dark I couldn't see or hear
an earlier rain left the leaves damp

I stood and moved toward the door
then froze again as I saw a head
again I remained still on the floor
as the parents kissed before they fled.
